After reading On the Way to Pomona I was interested to see where Charlie's spiritual quest would lead him next. This book has gone in a much darker direction. Into the psyche of those surviving the tragedies life has thrust upon them and those who hide their dark secrets, denying the weight and responsibility of the suffering they have caused. His characters are engaging and I found myself thinking about them when I was away from the book. He has masterfully woven their stories into one another and to avoid a spoiler alert, which I always hate, I will tell you that this is definitely a book worth reading. This is a strong work of fiction, maneuvered by well-wrought characters stretched to their limits in an emotional arena of incest and loss. The story is gripping, insightful, honest, fair-minded, believable, and enlightening. As a fiction writer, I am very impressed.
I knew that this book would be a different experience than On the Way to Pomona, but I was not prepared for the emotional impact of this story. The first part of the book is like reading a mystery, and it keeps the reader wondering about how the characters are connected and what are the clues to the accident. The connections and answers unfold slowly. I was on the edge of my seat. It is a page turner which I could not put down, and I kept reading late into the night to try to find the answers to my questions. The writing is cinematic. I felt that I was within the scenes both visually and emotionally. I loved On the Way to Pomona, but this book is richer. I savored every page. And I wish I could explore what happens to the characters as they confront the weight of loss.
Charles Van Eman has delivered an emotionally complex book that is psychologically accurate. His strong writing, apparent in his first book On the Way to Pomona, has strengthened in The Weight of Loss which tells a radically different and challenging story. The characters' personalities deepen as they meet the believable obstacles and choices life presents to them--or as they refuse to change and the consequences of that refusal. My son read the book in two days and said he couldn't put it down. I savored it for a few days longer, remaining engaged as the characters encounter increasingly difficult, unexpected and confounding complications. This makes the surprise ending both satisfying and stunning. As a psychotherapist, I can say that his characters personalities and response ring true. I look forward to Van Eman's next book and expect the continuing development of his style and characters and the ongoing evolution of his storytelling.
